A day Caught in the Net

Paik Philgyun

I was caught in the net. It was a unique one. At net of paper, covering the frame, catches fish. The frame asked me from its edge,&Who are you?&

Minjoo Kim asked me a question through her picture, and it created a giant hole in front of me. It was raining, and a puddle formed. I laid down in that puddle. The rain covered me, and I waited for myself to be submerged in water. My closed eyes were swimming in the puddle unquestioningly.

I found a forest of paint where lines were ink-painted and lights were colored. I woke up again and went to the night forest in the daylight. It was bright but dark. It was dark but visible. The forest is where big and small beings live as a nest or hideout. A clear color over the leaves once again reminded me that it was unaffectedly clear between you and I.

At some point, when I opened my eyes, the question of the painting pushed me into the river. There was no spray of water. I sank like no one knew. My consciousness sank down deeply. I started to think about things around me that weren&t so silent until this moment. The sound that filled the world was lowered. Something reached my hands, and I touched it. Indescribable touch, and it was light. What was that? What should it be?

There is a handle in the painting. The fact that a painting is a painting. The fence stops me from crossing from this stepped land to the other land. A glass wall between air and water. Minjoo Kim transfers that handle from imagination to reality, from past to present, and from classic to modern. Holding the handle, I look somewhere over the wall and fence. What will be there? Once again, I imagine myself crossing over there. In Minjoo&s painting, picturesque is that handle.

Her hands hold three threads: brush, net, and Ariadne&s thread. A brush goes to paper, a net goes to the river, and Ariadne&s thread goes to a labyrinth. The three threads have a role there. The lever of thought picks up a giant mountain far away, right in front of the paper with a brush. Her stroke becomes a net that sinks down to the infinite and captures a forest, rock, and even a river course. A promenader who goes to the mountain, forest, and river returns to the starting point following Ariadne&s thread, tied into the border of the canvas.

The air was refreshing. Grains of colors permeated the fiber of the paper. Although water was left with wind, most gloss still stayed in the painting. A promenader looked back with vague hesitancy. A sight follows that silent journey. A performing painting is just going ahead. Her brushing cleans her mind as there is no dust on the roof tile and floor. As if any being would look at a school of fish over the net, these, too, see the forest over the fram. Someone looked at me and asked. And vice versa. Said who are you?

Where is it on the net? A pictorial forest? My seat looking at her? The leaves that Minjoo draws look like certain scales. Vice versa. The tree grows over the paper and the being that shows a head or tail on the surface of the waterall are connected. Sky without a sky. One calming day, she greets to me when I was stuck in the net. *English translated by Kang Min-hyung
